Talking Transitions on What’s the Big Idea

This summer I sat down with my friend and fellow coach Andrew Horn for his show, What’s the Big Idea. We talked about navigating transition and how I support leaders through them. The episode is out, and I’m excited to share it with you.

Our conversation centered on how we move through major life and career transitions, from letting go of a familiar role or identity to exploring what comes next. We talked about getting curious about what keeps us stuck, making room for uncertainty, and trying small experiments while paying attention to how we feel.

Here are some of the topics we explored:

  • The anatomy of a transition. William Bridges’ work on endings, the messy middle, and new beginnings, including why leaving a role and letting go of an identity can happen on very different timelines.

  • How Hakomi has shaped my coaching. Establishing safety, bringing attention to the body, and learning to lead by following what’s unfolding in the person in front of me.

  • Rituals for endings. Honoring who we’ve been and what a chapter has meant through letters, gratitude, and deliberate goodbyes.

  • Small experiments. Trying things before committing to a new direction, then paying attention to what happens when we make contact with reality. A conversation, a class, or an afternoon making something can teach us what planning alone can’t.

  • The urge to hit rewind or fast forward. Recognizing when we’re retreating to what’s familiar or rushing ahead because staying in the uncertainty feels uncomfortable.

  • Choosing our own success scripts. Looking at the ideas about success and ambition we inherited from our families, communities, and industries, and deciding which ones still fit.

I hope you’ll give it a listen. If something in the conversation resonates or connects with what you’re going through, I’d love to hear from you.
